Chelsea, Theresa and Remus

~ Chelsea, Theresa and Remus ~

Over five years ago, Chelsea and Theresa welcomed Remus, a timid but sweet Corgi pup, into their lives. Since then, they have become a close family and bring love and joy into every day.

In 2017, Chelsea and their wife, Theresa, were living in Macau, a special administrative region of China. One day, while out and about, they came across a Corgi who was being kept in a cage so small he couldn’t even turn around and was scared of everyone and everything. When they were on their way to Shanghai for a trip, Chelsea named the pup ‘Remus’ and, in doing so, knew that they couldn’t not adopt him.

For the first year, Remus, or Remy, was terrified when meeting anyone new. He would shake and wet himself out of fear. However, with the love and care of his new humans, he gradually became less afraid and was able to trust those around him more.

Having Remus has had a huge impact on his new family, especially Chelsea. Chelsea has had struggles with anxiety, however, when they met Remus, who also had anxiety, they felt a special bond in that they could understand one another. If either of them felt like being active, they would be active together, and if either of them were having a difficult day, they would be right there for each other. On days that have been especially hard for Chelsea, having a canine companion has encouraged them to get out of bed, go outside, give a warm snuggle, or just find a bit of calm during their day.

Since learning to trust the world around him, Remus has absolutely flourished. He now enjoys meeting new friends – humans and dogs alike – and going on adventures. Chelsea and Theresa spent a whole year touring New Zealand in a van and during this time, they found that Remus loved this way of living. As well as this, he adores the water and going for a swim at the nearest beach. This is definitely his happy place.

Not only has Remus had an impact on Chelsea and Theresa, but also many others. He is a very active – and beloved – participant of the LGBTQIA+ community. His humans run a NZ-based queer book business named the ‘Alphabet Book Club’ which was launched in 2021, shortly after they returned to NZ from Macau. Here, Chelsea and Theresa, as well as Theresa’s sister, sell all kinds of books – from children’s to adult, fiction to non-fiction – by from LGBTQIA+ authors and/or with representation. On top of this, they have their own podcast, Facebook group and monthly book boxes to connect with more people who may be looking for their next great read! Remus plays a very important role in this. He has given himself the title ‘chief of security’ by sniffing all parcels sent out and barking at the courier, but works hard and often needs a nap while on the job.

As well as helping run a book business, Remus loves to show his pride whenever he can. He, Chelsea and Theresa often attend Vinegar Hill, a camping festival, and any other events they can find. Of course, Remus is always happily representing his pride by wearing his signature rainbow bandana.

The impact that Chelsea, Theresa and Remus have had on each other has been huge. Through learning to trust and be cared for, Remus has flourished and is living his best life. Having him as their canine companion has also made a world of difference for Chelsea. Each day is filled with unconditional love and endless joy and laughter, simply because they have one another.

Kayleigh and Dudley

~ Kayleigh and Dudley ~

Almost a year ago, Kayleigh, her husband and their cat, Pig, welcomed Dudley, a mini Dachshund, into their home. Since then, they have become a family and have improved each other’s lives.

For as long as she can remember, Kayleigh has always wanted a Dachshund. When she and her husband got married in January 2022, they decided it was a good time to look into adopting a furry friend. After some searching for a breeder who was registered and DNA tested, they met the right breeder for them and nine months later, they were told they might have a puppy!

After six weeks, Kayleigh and her husband were able to meet with the new litter. Once there, she instantly fell in love with one of the smallest puppies. He was tiny and wiggly, and as soon as he met Kayleigh, he went right over to sit in her lap to snuggle her, then went to snuggle Kayleigh’s husband. They both knew that this pup, now named Dudley, was perfect and, two weeks later, he was on his way to his forever home.

Having Dudley has improved his family’s life hugely, especially Kayleigh’s life. When she may be having a challenging mental health day, Dudley is always there for her. He encourages his human to wake up and feed him in the morning, and, no matter what, never fails to make her laugh and smile throughout the day.

Something that Kayleigh and Dudley enjoy is playing together. As Dudley is still quite young, he has seemingly endless energy and would happily play with his mini tennis ball all day, every day or do zoomies outside through the grass. At the end of the day, however, when he’s winding down, he loves snuggling up with his humans and has been known to watch a movie or two with them. As well as this, Dudley and Pig have also been known to spend time together, especially when treats are involved!

The impact that Dudley has had on his family has been huge. Kayleigh and he have formed such a special bond and each day is full of endless joy and laughter and unconditional love, simply because they have one another.

Jack and Podrick

Just over four years ago, Jack welcomed Dalmation pup, Podrick, into his life. Since then, they have formed a special bond.

In 2019, Jack was looking to adopt a furry friend. Then, he was told about a little puppy who was looking for his new home. He arranged a visit with the pup and, as soon as they met, it was love at first sight. That day, Jack went home with his new canine companion – Podrick.

Having Podrick, or Pod, has had a big impact on Jack. Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, having a furry friend helped Jack to feel less alone during that time. When things felt tough, Pod was right there to bring a smile to his human’s face. As well as this, he encourages his human to be more active. Together, they enjoy going for walks, exploring new places, and playing fetch with any and every stick Pod finds.

Not only this, but Pod has brought so much happiness to those within their community and online, too. Not long after starting Pod’s social media account did Jack share a photo of his canine companion interacting with a mouse! When they were out for their daily walk, Podrick stopped in his tracks and got himself as close to the ground as possible to come face to face with a small fuzzy mouse. It went viral and the sweet sight of the two brought joy to many people all over the world.

The bond that Jack and Pod share is truly special. They have brought so much light and joy into each other’s lives and continue to make every day better, simply by being there for one another.

Ernest and Booboo

Three years ago, Ernest meet Booboo, a sweet little Calico kitten. Since then, they have changed each other’s lives for the better.

On Christmas Eve of 2019, 3-month-old Booboo found her way to Ernest’s doorstep. She was frail, dehydrated, exhausted, had a broken leg and tail, and was in need of some care. As soon as he saw this kitten, Ernest felt an instant connection and knew that this kitten had found her forever home with him.

Having Booboo has taught Ernest so much. She has taught him patience and more understanding. As well as this, having Booboo through the Covid-19 pandemic helped him hugely. Having a furry friend meant that, each day, he had a purpose and someone else to care for during this stressful time. It was also during this time that Ernest had to give up his job as a photographer, however, he has since used his skills to take beautiful photos of Booboo and share her journey through social media.

Not only has Booboo impacted Ernest, but also those around them. Friends, family and neighbours are always interested to know how she is doing. Many people also follow Booboo’s day-to-day life on social media. No matter what, she can always brighten someone’s day, and being able to do this means a lot to Ernest.

The bond that Ernest and Booboo share is truly special. They love to watch movies and cartoons together and simply being able to spend time with each other. Every day is filled with love and joy because they have one another.

Brittany, Isla and Riley

About eight years ago, Brittany met Isla and Riley. Since then, they have become a family and have greatly impacted each other’s lives.

In 2014, Brittany was looking to adopt a furbaby. She has always had a passion for animals and wanted to adopt one to give them the best life possible. Then, one day, she came across two cats at her local SPCA – Isla and Riley. They stood out from the others with their bold personalities and, within moments of meeting them, she knew they had found their home.

Since adopting Isla and Riley, Brittany’s life has changed hugely. Through thick and thin, she has always been able to count on her feline friends. They bring a bit of hope to tough days and make the good days better, simply by being themselves. Isla is the more snuggly of the two cats, and is always happy to be cuddled and patted. Riley, while also snuggly, is more active and loves to help her human in the garden.

Something that Brittany enjoys is simply being able to spend time with her furry friends. Whether she’s watching them live their best lives, taking photos to share on their social media page, snuggling up together or playing, having this time together means so much to her, Isla and Riley.

The bond that Brittany, Isla and Riley share is truly special. They have changed each other’s lives for the better and continue to bring love and happiness into every day.

Morgan, Monty and Matrix

~ Morgan, Monty and Matrix ~

Four years ago, Morgan welcomed Monty into her life. Then, a few months later, she adopted Matrix. Since then, they have become a family and have brought endless joy into each other’s lives.

In February 2019, Morgan met Monty. He was a shy, but adorable, python. Immediately, Morgan felt they had a connection and knew that Monty had found his forever home. About six months later, they both welcomed a second python into their home, Matrix. Matrix’s first impression was a bit different to Monty’s in she was bold, brave and eager to get to know her new family.

Having Monty and Matrix has had a huge impact on Morgan. No matter what may be happening in her life, she knows she will always have her snakey friends. Through the Covid-19 pandemic, several family illnesses, and more, Monty and Matrix were right there, by Morgan’s side. As well as this, they have taught their human so much patience and understanding. However, one of the most important things they have taught her is that when they shed their skin, that change can be difficult but is worth it.

Because of how much Monty and Matrix have impacted her, Morgan is passionate about spreading awareness about snakes and how sweet they actually are. Through the Instagram page she started for them, she shares many photos and videos that educate others on what living with snakes is like. From posting videos of Monty and Matrix eating, resting and just their day-to-day lives, Morgan loves being able to share them with the world and bring a bit of joy to someone else’s day.

One example of Matrix brightening Morgan’s day was when she was doing laundry. While folding everything from the dryer, Morgan noticed a sock started to move on its own and start to float! Upon further inspection, she realised Matrix had found her way over to the laundry pile and decided to help by bringing the sock a bit closer to her human.

Something that Morgan, Monty and Matrix enjoy is simply being able to spend time together. Whenever she returns home from work or visiting a family member in hospital, she immediately goes to check on Monty and Matrix’s enclosure. If they’re awake, she loves to invite them out and watch TV or play a video game together (obviously while Morgan and her boyfriend play a game, Monty and Matrix are happily exploring the living room!).

Every day is full of endless joy and unconditional love, simply because Morgan, Monty and Matrix have one another. They have greatly changed each other’s lives for the better.

Courteney, Benjamin, Sunny and Lilly

~ Courteney, Benjamin, Sunny and Lilly ~

Four years ago, Courteney welcomed Benjamin into her life. Not long after, she adopted longhair Chihuahua, Sunny. Then last, but certainly not least, Lilly joined their family. Since then, they have improved each other’s lives greatly.

Sadly, in 2018, Courteney’s red Burmese cat, Rowan, passed away. She was devastated. Then, on New Year’s Day 2019, they met Benjamin, a Tabby Point Birman. Instantly, she and her husband fell in love with this confident kitty and knew he would be a perfect fit for them. It wasn’t long before he became the king of his new home. Having him helped to heal his new humans’ broken hearts.

In April of that same year, following the loss of Courteney’s Chocolate Point Birman cat, Beau, Courteney met Sunny through the NZ Chihuahua Rescue. As with Benjamin, Sunny came to her after a devastating loss, but he helped her through it. Initially, it took some time for Sunny to adjust to his new home, however, now he is absolutely thriving.

Some months later, while at work, a small kitten wandered into Courteney’s vet clinic. The kitten was covered in tangles and was very hungry. As soon as Courteney looked into the kitten’s bright green eyes, she knew that this kitten had found her forever home and was named Lilly. Since bringing her home, her health improved hugely and she has flourished with her new family. Courteney feels that Lilly was sent to her by Beau, as a way of letting her know he’s still watching over her.

Having Benjamin, Sunny and Lilly has impacted Courteney’s life hugely. They all arrived in her life during times of loss and health issues and have helped her through it all. During these difficult times, each of her companions has provided her with a purpose and has been a source of unconditional love. Because of the impact they have had on Courteney, she has made it her mission to be an advocate for all animals and help them through her work as a veterinary nurse for over six years.

Something that Courteney, Benjamin, Sunny and Lilly enjoy is simply spending time together. Sunny often accompanies his human to work, on car trips and even going for walkies. When spending time with Benjamin, he and Courteney work on all kinds of tricks together, from ‘sit’ to ‘speak’ and even ‘high-five’! After a busy or stressful day, Courteney loves cuddling up with Lilly, who is always happy to be petted and snuggled.

The impact that Benjamin, Sunny and Lilly have had on Courteney has been immeasurable. They have helped her through some difficult times and have made the good times even better. Every day is filled with love and happiness simply because they have each other.

Lishon and Tunich

~ Lishon and Tunich ~

Almost a year ago, Lishon welcomed Xoloitzcuintli pup, Tunich, into her life. Since then, they have become the best of friends and bring endless joy into each other’s lives.

Lishon had wanted a Xoloitzcuintli, or Xolo, dog for a long time and spent quite a while searching for one. Then, one day, she came across someone who bred them, so she signed up for the waitlist in 2020. Then, two years later, Lishon received a call about a litter of puppies! One pup, in particular, stood out to her.

Not too long after, Lishon and her boyfriend drove from Washington State to Southern California and finally, the pup, named Tunich, had found her forever home. Lishon couldn’t believe this little puppy was now hers. The whole drive back home, Tunich, or Tuna, was curled up in her new human’s lap.

Having Tuna has changed Lishon’s life hugely. Each night, Tuna’s her human’s hot water bottle, and every day, she brings Lishon so much joy. Whether she’s feeling down or a bit unwell, her canine companion is always right there. As well as this, Tuna has also helped her human to be more social. As a naturally shy person, having a doggo has encouraged Lishon to have more conversations with strangers as many want to know more about Tuna and Xolo dogs.

Since adopting Tuna, every day has been filled with love and joy. Whenever Lishon returns home from work, she is always met by an excited and wiggly pup. No matter what, Tuna can always brighten her human’s day. She has shown Lishon unconditional love and has brought a smile to her face every single day. Sometimes, Lishon and her boyfriend look at Tuna and think about how lucky they are to have her in their lives.

Something that Lishon and Tuna enjoy is being active together. Whether they’re playing outside in the backyard or going on an adventure, they love being able to appreciate life together and just have fun. When not being active, simply snuggling up together is their go to pastime. While Tuna is certainly not a lap dog, she will often jump onto Lishon’s lap and demand cuddles.

The bond that Lishon and Tunich have is so special. Every day since being together, they have brough endless love and happiness into one another’s lives and continue to make each day better.

Amy, Lady and Gus

Almost six years ago, Amy adopted Lady. Then, four years later, they welcomed Gus into their family. Since then, Amy, Lady and Gus have changed each other’s lives hugely.

In 2017, Amy was looking to adopt a dog. After some searching, she found a litter of puppies online looking for their forever homes. Two of the puppies had already been adopted, but when she went to meet them in person, she instantly fell in love with the pup named Lady. Then and there, Amy knew this puppy had found her home. Four years later, in 2021, Amy came across a pup named Gus on PetFinder. As soon as she saw his face, she fell in love and decided to adopt him.

Having Lady and Gus has changed Amy’s life. Lady is a little ray of sunshine in her human’s life and, no matter what, can always bring a smile to her face. Because of this, she has had a big impact on Amy’s mental wellbeing and continues to make each day better. Since adopting Gus, he has become very in tune with Amy’s emotions. Whenever she’s feeling anxious or upset, Gus always walks over and gives her lots of cuddles.

Not only have Lady and Gus impacted Amy’s life, but also those around them. When they are out and about or just walking down the street, they bring a bit of joy to everyone they meet. Amy feels that the world would be a better place if everyone had a dog like Lady or Gus!

Something that Amy, Lady and Gus enjoy doing is spending time together. One of Amy and Lady’s most favourite things is sitting down and watching a movie. Lady’s favourite kinds of movies are cartoons and horrors as she will stay up and watch the movie with her human. Times like these always fill Amy’s heart and being able to spend this time together means so much to her.

The bond that Amy, Lady and Gus share is amazing. They have changed each other’s lives for the better and continue to fill every day with love and happiness.
